After Tuesday's rainout in Jupiter against the Marlins, Mets RHP Zack Wheeler -- who was set to start -- will instead throw 90 or more pitches Wednesday during an intrasquad game during the team's off day.

Wheeler remains on track to start the third game of the regular season, but with the rainout pushing his schedule back, he will now be making the start on regular rest instead of an extra day of rest.

Jacob deGrom is scheduled to start on Opening Day -- March 28 against the Nationals -- with Noah Syndergaard starting the second game of the season on March 30 (after a team off-day), and Wheeler getting the ball on March 31.

The Mets think the Nationals have seen enough of their major league pitchers this spring.

The team revealed on Saturday that they will shield their pitchers from Grapefruit League games so that other teams will not be able to get a good look at them, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

Jacob deGrom, who was on schedule to start in Sunday's game against the Nationals, will instead pitch in a "B" game on the back fields of the Mets' Spring Training facility along with Jeurys Familia and Justin Wilson

Steven Matz' struggles are not getting in the way of his optimism.

The Mets lefthander had by far his worst outing of Spring Training on Friday, allowing eight runs, including four home runs, on seven hits and a walk in just two innings of work in his latest start against the Washington Nationals.

Matz, though, knows what the problem is and said that it is better he identifies and works through it now rather than when the season starts.

The NL East is stacked, balanced and expected to be the most compelling division in baseball this season. In large part, this is because the division features several of the league's most dominant starting pitchers and best overall pitching staffs.

For starters, Max Scherzer (Nationals) and Jacob deGrom (Mets) are widely considered to be the top two starting pitchers in all of baseball. According to multiple projection systems and fantasy rankings, the next best 20 pitchers in the league feature an additional five arms from the NL East, including Aaron Nola (Phillies), Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler, (Mets) and Patrick Corbin (Nationals) and Stephen Strasburg (Nationals).

In 2018, among NL pitchers producing at least 2.0 fWAR, six were from the NL East, including deGrom, Scherzer, Nola, Syndergaard, Wheeler and Mike Foltynewicz (Braves). Corbin, who was with the D-backs but has since signed with the Nationals, also finished in the Top 10. If extended to the Top 20, two more Phillies join the list (Nick Pivetta and Vince Velasquez).

Five things to know about Monday's game

1. Steven Matz pitched well in the first inning and pitched well in the third inning. The second inning? Not so much. While working on it, he allowed four runs (all in the second inning) on five hits while walking two and striking out two in 2.2 innings.

Noah Syndergaard after 1st start 00:00:58
New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard discusses how he felt after his first outing and how 2019 team reminds him of 2015 World Series team.

The 2019 Mets have World Series aspirations, and after making his Spring Training debut, Noah Syndergaard compared the 2019 version to the squad that reached the World Series in 2015.

"Just the thought of approaching this 2019 season as a whole, and it's the pitching staff, the team, the newest acquisitions we've acquired ... it gives me goosebumps, it gets me excited. It brings me back to the feeling that we had in 2015," Syndergaard said Monday after firing two scoreless innings.

"It's kind of a feeling (that is) tough to describe with words," Syndergaard added. "But there's a lot of excitement. A lot of the guys holding eachother accountable, pulling for one another, and just trying to make everybody the best baseball player we could be."

Brodie Van Wagenen (Matthew Cerrone, MetsBlog.com)

It's not that Tim Tebow is a local legend and brings with him an enormous crowd that make his autograph sensations so unique. Mike Piazza drew similar crowds, as did David Wright.

The difference between Piazza and Wright and Tebow is that, when any fan is lucky enough to be chosen by Tebow and gets their item signed, the fan immediately turns around and is visibly giddy.

In the case of Wright or Piazza, obviously fans were pumped to get the autograph, but they'd remain focused looking to see if there was another player coming down the line. In the case of Tebow, the selected glow, become frozen and childlike, looking as if they don't know what to do next...

Mets manager Mickey Callaway had his ups and downs in his first year as the team's skipper in 2018. After an 11-1 start to the season, the Amazin's looked destined for the postseason. But a horrendous June month washed away that hope, even after the team put together a strong finish to the season.

Since then, the Mets have entered a win-now mode, spearheaded by its new GM in Brodie Van Wagenen. The former agent has brought in the necessary pieces to see the Mets compete for a division title in what is expected to be a tough NL East. And they still tout arguably the best starting rotation in the game.

With Van Wagenen already stirring the pot this offseason by saying "come get us" to the Mets' rivals, Callaway has some lofty expectations on his shoulder to produce a postseason-quality club. So, with that in mind, here are some questions he should be facing from the media in his first presser down in Port St. Lucie...

Wilson Ramos ready for 2019 00:02:11
Wilson Ramos is healthy for spring training for the first time in awhile. He looks forward to learning about his new teammates on the Mets.

One of the Mets' biggest needs this offseason was improving the catcher position. They not only wanted a solid defensive player, but one that also made an impact in the batter's box.

Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen ended up signing veteran C Wilson Ramos, calling him "the perfect fit for us" back in December. Ramos has the power bat, strong arm, and defensive prowess at the dish that makes him the everyday catcher heading into Port St. Lucie on Tuesday, as pitchers and catchers officially reported to camp.

Ramos said he is "100 percent" coming into camp, and has been working hard this offseason to last a full season -- the same goal he had when he signed with the Mets back in December.

Danny Abriano, SNY.tv | Twitter | Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen said Tuesday that Jacob deGrom setting an Opening Day deadline on contract extension talks was a "mutual understanding," suggesting it shouldn't be viewed as a negative.

However, this situation certainly can't be viewed as a positive -- not on the heels of deGrom being disappointed last week with how the negotiations were going.

So now the Mets are in a precarious spot, under pressure to get something done with deGrom. And if they don't, there's a chance their dream rotation -- the area they've built their entire team around in an effort to contend now -- will fall apart sooner rather than later...

Baseball Prospectus' 2019 PECOTA (Player Empirical Comparison and Optimization Test Algorithm) projections are out, and they foresee big things from the Mets -- especially the starting rotation.

PECOTA is a system that "takes a player's past performance and tries to project the most likely outcome for the following season. It looks at all of the numbers, and all the numbers that make up the numbers, to see which players are more likely to repeat their success and which ones benefited from good fortune."

When it comes to the Mets' starting pitchers, PECOTA -- a projection system that is notoriously conservative -- sees things shaking out like this...

Catching up with Steven Matz 00:01:49
SNY caught up with Steven Matz and got his thoughts on everything from the DH position to expectations for the 2019 season

Spring Training hasn't officially started, but plenty of Mets are already getting ready in Port St. Lucie, including Steven Matz.

Steven Matz gave his opinion on adding a designated hitter to the National League -- so pitchers would be eliminated from the lineup. The lefty said he's excited to see what the Mets' newest acquisitions will bring to the team.

"It's a sign that everyone's excited," Matz said of players arriving early to Mets camp. "Kinda chomping at the bit to get started."

The Marlins can't be serious with this, can they?

That was the vibe coming out of the Mets' suite at the Delano hotel in Las Vegas in December, when they were trying their best to pry star catcher J.T. Realmuto away from a division rival.

When Miami, according to major league sources, indicated an asking price of one or two of Michael Conforto, Brandon Nimmo and Amed Rosario plus multiple prospects, the Mets front office was sure that price would come down before long.

The Mets have interest in signing free agent LHP Gio Gonzalez and have remained in touch with his camp, but that interest is not currently at a multiyear level, reports SNY's Andy Martino, who notes that Gonzalez is still holding out for more than a one-year deal.

Martino reported earlier this week that the Mets and Yankees were both still interested in rotation depth, but that neither team was involved in negotations for Wade Miley, who recently signed a one-year deal with the Astros worth $4.5 million.

Because the Mets have their top five rotation spots currently locked in, Martino suggested it could be easier for them to convince a free agent pitcher such as Doug Fister or Brett Anderson to sign and audtion for a "swingman" role than it could be to sign Gonzalez.

Steven Matz
Steven Matz

Mets LHP Steven Matz is a pivotal player for the Mets, which means the difference between making or missing the playoffs could hinge on how he performs in 2019.

Assuming each takes the mound 30 times this season, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard will again be among the league's elite pitchers. There's every reason to believe Zack Wheeler, in his walk year, will continue his terrific turn-around from 2018. Jason Vargas (and the pitchers behind him) should never be counted on to be a difference-maker at any point in the season.

This leaves Matz, who, at 27 years old, is at a make-or-break point in his career. And he could be poised for a breakout...

Sandy Alderson
Sandy Alderson

John Harper, SNY.tv | Twitter | If the trade for Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz pays off in a big way for the Mets, new GM Brodie Van Wagenen will be hailed for his boldness and creativity. But to some degree such success would also vindicate Sandy Alderson as well.

After all, it's fair to say the Alderson regime's biggest failure was poor drafting that led to a weak farm system. Certainly, I made that case more than once over the last couple of years, when injuries at the big-league level exposed the organization's glaring lack of talent in the high minors.

However, that assessment needs to be updated a bit, and now that Alderson has officially moved on to become a senior advisor with the A's, where he won a championship as GM and groomed Billy Beane for his Brad Pitt moment, there's a chance his tenure with the Mets will look better in the years to come...

Will Mets deal any aces? 00:00:48
New York Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen weighs in on his strategy this winter meetings and the difficulty of trading Noah Syndergaard.

Though Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen is fielding calls for a handful of his top players, he admitted on Wednesday it's going to be "very difficult" to trade an ace like Noah Syndergaard

After New York acquired elite closer Edwin Diaz and eight-time All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano from Seattle, Van Wagenen made it very clear that the Mets are going all in for the World Series championship next season. As far as conversations at the Winter Meetings go, he envisions holding that trophy with help from his current, star-studded rotation.

"We're going into this marketplace assuming that both [Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom], as well as Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler, are on our team," Van Wagenen said.

Danny Abriano, SNY.tv | Twitter | The Mets badly want J.T. Realmuto, so much so that they have had three-way talks with the Yankees and Marlins on a potential deal that would land Realmuto with the Mets and Noah Syndergaard with the Yankees.

SNY's Andy Martino reported late Monday from the Winter Meetings that Syndergaard to the Yankees is one of many scenarios in play for the Mets, and added that the Yankees' interest in the Mets' pitching is not limited to Syndergaard.

While adding Realmuto would be huge for the Mets, they should absolutely not do it at the expense of Syndergaard -- unless another major piece is coming back to them in return. And by major, we mean an impact piece...

Things you should know about today's game...

1) Conforto's bases-loaded triple capped a four-run fourth that put the Mets ahead one inning after they failed to score despite having the bags juiced and nobody out. Jay Bruce's sacrifice fly -- his fifth RBI in three games -- put New York on top on the first. Washington rallied for three runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead off an ineffective Steven Matz. McNeil's RBI single cut the lead to 3-2 and Conforto followed with his first triple of the season to give New York a 5-3 edge.

Near the trade deadline, rumors of the Mets dealing away some of their top-tier starters were swirling around Flushing. And rightfully so considering the Mets weren't ticketed for the postseason.

Initially, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard were of high interest, but the Mets eventually walked that back. They didn't, however, take Zack Wheeler and Steven Matz off the table. At the end of the day, no trade was ever struck and the rotation stayed how it was.

Pitching coach Dave Eiland was a happy camper.

Since he came of the DL, Mets LHP Steven Matz has impressed with solid outings, and another came tonight against the Phillies.

New York suffered the loss, but Matz didn't see a decision in this one after his five innings of work. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out eight and walking two.

The only blow to Matz was Carlos Santana's two-run homer in the top of the third, which gave the Phillies the lead. But the Mets got it right back with a Jeff McNeil double that scored Brandon Nimmo in the bottom half of that inning.
