It is widely believed the 1986 Giants originated the tradition of dousing the head coach with Gatorade on the sidelines after a victory. As it turns out, although they perfected the ritual, they were not the first team to do it....

But where did the tradition start? In his excellent book, First in Thirst: How Gatorade Turned the Science of Sweat Into a Cultural Phenomenon, Darren Rovell wrote about how the Giants first began doing the celebration in a section titled ?The Inaugural Dunk.? Amazingly enough, it began as somewhat of an act of aggression!

Former Giants QB and CBS game analyst Phil Simms held court backstage before Sunday's 25th Anniversary celebration commemorating the team's Super Bowl XXI victory over Denver.

Simms was the MVP of that game, going 22-for-25 passing with 3 TDs and was the first player to utter the phrase "I'm going to Disneyland (World)".

After this session I spoke with Simms about that picture-perfect day and his near-perfect game:

If you're a Giant fan, you have to love Phil McConkey.

The former Navy helicopter pilot exemplified the spirit of the Giants in 1986. ?McConkey was cut by the Giants before that season, but was re-acquired by the club to bolster its sagging special teams play. ?He did that, and more.

McConkey was the lovable underdog, the guy you had to root for. ?Today, at the Giants' anniversary event, he was as loquatious, passionate and poignant as ever.

This Sunday at theMeadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, NJ, approximately 60 Giants players and coaches will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Giants Super Bowl XXI championship team.

The coach of that team, of course, was the now legendary Bill Parcells, who spoke with Giants play-by-play man Bob Papa and select Giants season ticket holders today via conference call.

Parcells was a defensive coach his whole career and rarely got involved in the offensive game plan. He didn't have to. He had Phil Simms, another Giants legend, at the helm.

Giants running back Charles Scott, on the roster as a reserve/future player, is in a Louisiana hospital recovering from an automobile accident. His agent said that he didn't suffer any career-threatening injuries from the accident, which occurred Wednesday night. Scott, 22, was on the Giants' practice squad last season.

Scott tweeted the following: "I just want to thank all my friends, fans & family for the many needed prayers and support. I'm doing well and will be home soon. Love y'all."

Giants.com's Michael Eisen has more on the Super Bowl XXI reunion: When the 1986 Giants won Super Bowl XXI, Harry Carson was the universally acknowledged leader of the team. He was the sole captain, the man his teammates confided in and the player Coach Bill Parcells leaned on to solve problems in the locker room. Carson is still the top dog as that most memorable of Giants teams prepares to commemorate its 25th anniversary. He has organized a celebration that will bring together the vast majority of the players and coaches from 1986. Giants fans will have an opportunity to join the festivities and mingle with those storied figures in franchise history on Sunday, June 12, at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, N.J., beginning at 8 a.m. Read more

Ralph Vacchiano on the idle Giants defense: Another small, but dedicated group of Giants gathered Wednesday at Hoboken High School to play catch and run drills with Eli Manning. And again, it was only quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends. So where are all the Giants' defensive players? Why aren't they practicing during the NFL lockout, too? "Just because you don't see us," Justin Tuck said Wednesday, "doesn't mean we're not practicing." In this case, actually, it does. (Daily News)

Gary Myers on Giants co-owner John Mara returning to the negotiating table on Monday in?Minneapolis: Mara was present for the final nine of the 16 negotiating sessions that were held in Washington and presided over by federal mediator George Cohen leading up to the March 11 decertification by the NFLPA and the start of the lockout hours later by the owners. He was the only owner who attended the last nine meetings. But when U.S. District Court Judge Susan Nelson ordered the sides back to mediation under the supervision of U.S. Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan on April 14, Mara was tied up in jury duty in lower Manhattan.
