The Jets continue to reshape their secondary this season, as GM Joe Douglas brought in CB/S Derrick Kindred off waivers on Tuesday, the team announced.

Kindred rejoins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who he worked with on the Browns for the past two seasons. A former fourth-round pick by Cleveland back in 2016, Kindred had been working with the Colts this preseason, but he was waived by the team this week.

The 25-year-old has 42 games of NFL experience, where he's started 17 times. Last season, the TCU product tallied 45 combined tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and one pass defended.

The Jets continue their preseason schedule on Thursday night on the road against the Falcons in Atlanta. Their first game was a loss in the "Snoopy Bowl" to the Giants, something they're looking to bounce back from tonight.

It will definitely be a tough task to do so, especially when you consider one big strength and one big weakness for the Falcons and Jets respectively.

Last season, the Falcons -- led by Matt Ryan on the offensive side of the ball -- were a pass-heavy team. That's not to say the rest of the NFL hasn't turned into that, but the Falcons did better than most teams. They finished fourth in passing offense for the regular season with 209.8 yards per game.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The Jets knew the cornerback position was their biggest flaw, even before Trumaine Johnson injured his hamstring at practice on Sunday. They were shorthanded from the start at one of the most important positions in football.

Now, with Johnson out for the foreseeable future -- "I don't think it's going to be months," Adam Gase said, "but I mean, we'll see." -- the situation is dire.

Entering training camp, cornerback was viewed as one of the weakest positions on the Jets' roster. Many view Darryl Roberts, who started five games at cornerback last year and another five at free safety, as an inadequate option to start across from Trumaine Johnson. Johnson, of course, had his own issues with injuries and insubordination last year, too.

In the first preseason game, Roberts and Johnson weren't tested in their brief appearance. However, concern intensified about the depth on the roster, as the second unit struggled badly. Derrick Jones, who was released the next day, was burned for a long catch and Parry Nickerson gave up a number of catches, including one that went for a 51-yard touchdown. Rookie Kyron Brown also had a bad mistake that led to a 22-yard gain as he sought to jump the route on a pass to the slot receiver, leaving his man open on the outside.

Already thin at cornerback, the Jets suffered another blow within the position group Sunday.

Cornerback Trumaine Johnson injured his hamstring, head coach Adam Gase told reporters following practice, after intercepting quarterback Sam Darnold and running it back.

Johnson, who battled a quad injury in 2018 on the way to 10 appearances 40 tackles and four interceptions, is out indefinitely.

The Jets announced Wednesday that cornerback Brian Poole has been added to the Active/Non-Football Injury list. This means they are a man down in the secondary for Thursday morning's practice and will continue to be until he's reactivated.

Listing him in that way doesn't save the Jets a roster spot and he can be activated at any time, as soon as he's ready to practice. It's merely a precautionary measure against him suffering further setbacks and remaining out for an extended time. Since Poole evidently showed up with the injury rather than suffering it during organized team activities, the team could in theory part ways with Poole in such a scenario without being on the hook for his salary.

The reality is that this likely isn't particularly serious and the Jets could see Poole back soon. However, even if he returns within the next few days, he will have lost ground in the battle to earn the nickelback role he's been projected to win since the Jets signed him to a one-year, $3 million deal back in March.

There is widespread concern that the cornerback position could be a weakness for the Jets in the upcoming season. With roles available, could someone unexpected step up and become a key contributor?

Projected Starters: Trumaine Johnson, Darryl Roberts, Brian Poole (slot/nickel)

Projected Backups: Derrick Jones, Parry Nickerson, Blessuan Austin

On the Bubble: Arthur Maulet, Tevaughn Campbell, Mark Myers, Kyron Brown

Each year, football fans anxiously await the new Madden NFL game to hit the shelves. But their player ratings generate even more buzz.

Well, EA Sports has released their initial rankings for each team, and Jets fans may not like where their team has ended up.

At the moment, the Jets are a 78 overall with an 73 offense and 80 defense, which is good for the sixth-worst team in the game. The Dolphins, an AFC East rival, are the game's worst team at 72 overall, while the Bills are third-worst at 78 overall. The Super Bowl defending-champion Patriots are an overall 87.

For the second straight offseason, the Jets went on a huge spending spree, and this time it looks like they spent their money more wisely. They brought in stars and players who can truly make a difference.

At least that's what they believe.

The Jets' offseason has been a wild roller-coaster ride. It started at the bottom when they fired their head coach, peaked during free agency and the draft, then went on a wild spiral downward when they fired their general manager … and then somehow managed to come out of it OK.

In fact, not only do they seem OK now that GM Joe Douglas and his good buddy, head coach Adam Gase, are in charge; they are convinced they are on an uphill climb again. They are loaded with optimism. They feel like they are finally headed in the right direction. They believe a return to the playoffs is near.

Maybe they're right. Or maybe they're fooling themselves. For now, though, there has been an unusual amount of hope and excitement around the Jets as they wrapped up their spring organized team activities and mini-camps. Time will tell if that's warranted or not.

Jets camp is in full swing, and there's a buzz in the Florham Park air. There's a new head coach, a new GM, and lots of fresh faces on the field.

Which players have the potential to be unheralded X-factors for the Jets this year? Here's five guys who have stood out so far.

Jonotthan Harrison (C)

Harrison is a familiar face after starting nine games over the last two years, but there was some thought that the Jets may pursue an upgrade at center this offseason. Instead, they stuck with Harrison, and the results are paying off.

Now that the Jets have filled their general manager vacancy, there will inevitably be changes in the way the Jets put together their team.

While Joe Douglas, like Mike Maccagnan before him, has a background in scouting, there are plenty of differences in his approach.

Let's consider some of the main tenets, how they differ from those of Maccagnan and what this could mean for some of the players on the current roster.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Adam Gase will act mostly the Jets head coach this week, not the interim GM nor the leader of a search firm. Le'Veon Bell will be in a Jets uniform, mostly because it's mandatory. And young Sam Darnold will finally get a sense of what he can do in his new offense with all his weapons on the field.

For the next three days, as the Jets begin their three-day, full-team, mandatory mini-camp, it will be football first, with all the off-field drama of the last few weeks finally pushed aside. Gase's coaching -- not his front office power play -- will be the center of attention. And there will plenty of interest storylines to watch.

Here are the top five:

Earlier this offseason, we speculated on how the defensive players on the Jets roster would fit into new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' system. Let's now consider how the players brought in via free agency and the draft will fit.

Mike Maccagnan was announced at the Jets general manager in January 2015, after he beat out a handful of candidates, including current Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier. After the disastrous outcome of using a search firm to find their previous general manager (John Idzik), the Jets' decision to hire Maccagnan came largely from the recommendation of the experienced pairing of Charlie Casserly and Ron Wolf.

Early results for Maccagnan were good. Having been hired alongside Todd Bowles, Maccagnan made a couple of splashes and some shrewd moves, putting the team in position to make the postseason until they choked the opportunity away in the season finale in Buffalo.

Last season, Jets CB Trumaine Johnson was the new kid on the block. He had to learn new schemes, meet and build relationships with new teammates, and get used to a new city.

But, with new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams joining the team in 2019, Johnson will be one of the few Jets who already knows what to expect.

For three seasons during his Rams career, Johnson had Williams as his defensive coordinator. He knows what system he likes to run, and of course, his very aggressive demeanor on the game and practice field. As they reunite again with Gang Green, Johnson is excited for the defense's potential under Williams' guidance.

With the exception of a couple of vague tweets heard 'round the NFL, Le'Veon Bell was one of the quietest free agents in the league on Monday. If the Jets were looking to make some noise by signing the NFL's No. 1 free agent, it looks like they're going to have to wait.

For the moment, as multiple NFL sources told SNY, the Jets are believed to be the favorite to land the 27-year-old running back. But the truth is, only Bell knows for sure for whom he will toll. He said on Twitter he had more than two teams to choose from. The Jets, 49ers, Eagles, Raiders, Dolphins and Bears had all been mentioned as possible destinations.

Bowles talks about looking back 00:01:35
Todd Bowles doesn't have the time to dwell on the past, Sam Darnold speaks on consistency and Trumaine Johnson talks about missing practice

It is almost certain that the Jets' season finale against the Patriots on Sunday will be Todd Bowles last game as head coach for New York. But he can't focus on that at the moment.

Instead, he's leaving the "what-ifs" aside to hopefully finish another rough season on a high note.

"I don't have time for the 'what-ifs' right now," Bowles said after practice on Wednesday. "The games come too quickly every week. We don't have enough time for me to stand up here and tell everything I've learned this year. You learn a long list of things as a coach every year, every game."

Jets CB Trumaine Johnson was absent from practice on Wednesday, and it wasn't due to injury.

Instead, head coach Todd Bowles told reporters Johnson was out due to an "in-house matter that we're dealing with." Bowles wouldn't delve into that matter, but when asked if he would be on the field for the Jets' season finale against the Patriots on Sunday, he replied "we'll see."

This doesn't seem like a good situation in the slightest of the 28-year-old cornerback the Jets signed to a five-year, $72.5 million deal this past offseason. If he misses this game, it would be his sixth game not suiting up this season after missing five straight weeks (Week 5-9) with a quad injury.

New York also listed safety Marcus Maye, who missed the first three games of the season but debuted last Sunday vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars, as questionable with an ankle/foot injury.

Wide receiver Quincy Enunwa and cornerback Darryl Roberts, who respectively suffered injuries to their hip and hamstring Thursday, practiced in full on Friday.

The Jets had a boatload of cap space as well as the No. 3 overall draft pick to work with this offseason. And LB Darron Lee thinks the moves made using those resources have looked good thus far.

The most notable of the acquisitions made by GM Mike Maccagnan include CB Trumaine Johnson, LB Avery Williamson, and first-round draft pick QB Sam Darnold. These three players are the crucial chess pieces Lee thinks will help them now and in the future.

"This is a game of chess, not checkers," Lee told Jets.com's Eric Allen. "Adding those important pieces like Tru, Avery, and Sam is huge. It has us going in the right direction in my opinion, but implementing those guys in our brotherhood and our standard in what we have here is huge. Seeing how they're abiding by it also and they're jelling in smoothly with it -- it makes you excited. It can't help but make you excited because they're buying in."
