Darnold happy to get 1st win 00:01:27
New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold was happy to be back and help the team get their first win of the season

Sam Darnold is back. And so is the Jets' offense.

In case anyone needed proof that the problem the last three weeks had been poor quarterback play, the 22-year-old Darnold showed how much a difference even a competent quarterback can make. And he was more than competent. He was outstanding. Playing for the first time since Week 1, he completed 23 of 32 passes for 338 yards with two touchdowns and an interception

It was enough to let the Jets hang on for their first win of the season -- 24-22 over the Dallas Cowboys.

Over the next few weeks, the Jets should be getting several starters back from injury or suspension, headlined of course by Sam Darnold. This should provide a much-needed injection of talent for a team that has mostly been over matched in losing each of their first four games.

However, while the team as a whole has been struggling, there have been some positive flashes here and there from young players who have been making the most of their opportunity for additional playing time.

While the returning players should send most of these individuals back to the bench, it would be a shame if their playing time dried up altogether. Let's explore some players who deserve to continue getting chances to contribute even as the team approaches full strength:

Ty Montgomery (ROBERT DEUTSCH )
Ty Montgomery (ROBERT DEUTSCH )

Entering this season, the Jets loved that they not only added RB Le'Veon Bell to their backfield, but also Ty Montgomery who came in as a free agent as well.

Much like Bell, Montgomery can do it all from his position. He considers himself a "football player hybrid" for his ability to do whatever his coaches need. From catching out of the backfield, to running back kicks and punts, to picking up yards on the ground rushing, Montgomery is a Swiss Army knife for head coach Adam Gase

Even his No. 88 as a running back makes Montgomery one of the NFL's enigmas.

Jets talk making improvements 00:01:37
Gase, Darnold and Bertolet on continuing to improve the Jets offense and Bertolet trying to solidify kicking game

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Sam Darnold got out of the Jets' game against the New Orleans Saints on Saturday night in one piece.

And that's pretty much the best thing that can be said about his game and the Jets' offense in their 28-13 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Saturday night.

Right from the start, Darnold and the Jets' offense looked as out of sync as they've been all preseason. There were fumbles, breakdowns, bad throws, drops, and more than enough bad blocking to go around. Yes, he still didn't have Le'Veon Bell in his arsenal, and he was also missing three-fifths of his starting offensive line.

Ty Montgomery could be a useful piece for the Jets this offseason, even with Le'Veon Bell playing the focal point out of the team's backfield.

Both are versatile runners and Montgomery, a former wide receiver turned running back with the Packers and Ravens, might even be the more versatile one.

Because of his do-it-all abilities, New York head coach Adam Gase revealed this weekend he didn't expect Montgomery to be available for the Jets to sign in April when the team inked him to a one-year deal.

Last season, it was unclear who the Jets' return specialist would be, but Andre Roberts won the job and ended up in the pro bowl. He's gone now though, so who will undertake the role instead? …

Projected Starters: Ty Montgomery
Projected Backups: Jamison Crowder
On the Bubble: JJ Jones, Tim White, Greg Dortch, Quadree Henderson, Deonte Thompson, Trenton Cannon, Valentine Holmes
Departures: Andre Roberts

The Rundown

This time last year, we were talking about names like Trenton Cannon, Elijah McGuire and Lucky Whitehead as candidates for the return game. However, the veteran Roberts won the job almost by default as McGuire got hurt in camp and Cannon muffed two punts and fumbled on a kickoff return in preseason

The Jets made a splash in the offseason and will now build their running game around Le'Veon Bell, but he's not the only talented running back on the roster ...

Projected Starters: Le'Veon Bell
Projected Backups: Ty Montgomery, Bilal Powell
On the Bubble: Elijah McGuire, Trenton Cannon, De'Angelo Henderson, Valentine Holmes
Departures: Isaiah Crowell

The Rundown

There's no question who the starter will be in 2019 because Bell is the league's highest paid running back and the kind of game-breaking talent that could transform the offense's fortunes. However, there is plenty of intrigue around who will make the final roster and earn some touches inbackup roles.

The Jets landed their top free agent target in Le'Veon Bell this offseason, but they went right back into the free agency pool to find his backup in Ty Montgomery as well. Montgomery officially signed with the Jets on Monday, and he couldn't be happier to get started with Gang Green.

"It's a fresh start," Montgomery told newyorkjets.com's Ethan Greenberg. "It's a new opportunity and it's a great opportunity. I get to go out there and I speak for myself with my play. Finally. And I'm looking forward to that."

Montgomery had a pretty rough 2018 season, which is why the fresh start feels so good. He played in seven games with the Packers -- the team he spent the previous three seasons with -- but was traded the game after fumbling a key kickoff return after the Rams in Week 8. He was shipped to Baltimore to play for the Ravens, however he didn't see many touches.
