Prior to Saturday's game against the Pirates, the Mets announced they had recalled pitcher Jacob Rhame and optioned pitcher Tyler Bashlor to Triple-A Syrcause.

Rhame has appeared in four games this year, pitching to an 0-1 record with a 5.40 ERA, allowing three runs on three hits over five innings. He's struggled with his control, issuing eight walks while striking out five.

Bashlor is 0-3 with a 7.16 ERA in 18 games pitched this season. He's struck out 14 batters and walked 10 over 16.1 innings pitched.

Pirates end Mets win streak 00:01:19
The Pirates ended the Mets 7-game winning streak chasing Steven Matz in the 4th inning and going on to an 8-4 win.

The Mets jumped out to an early lead, but they couldn't make it last in their 8-4 loss to the Pirates on Friday, ending their seven-game win streak. >> Box Score

Five takeaways from Friday's game...

1) Coming off a five-hit shutout in his last outing, Steven Matz cruised through the first three innings against the Pirates. But things took an unfortunate turn for the lefty in the fourth. After a leadoff walk, Matz allowed three straight RBI hits to Josh Bell, Jose Osuna and Melky Cabrera. Shortly after another RBI hit from Elias Diaz, Matz was pulled from the game. He went just 3.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits.

The Mets announced Friday that the team has recalled pitchers Tyler Bashlor and Stephen Nogosek and optioned pitcher Chris Mazza and SS Luis Guillorme to Triple-A Syracuse.

The move gives Mickey Callaway more options out of the bullpen for Friday's game after Thursday's contest lasted 16 innings, with the Mets using a total of eight pitchers in an eventual 3-2 loss. Mazza was saddled with the decision, allowing two runs on five hits with a chance to close the game out in the 16th.

Guillorme logged five games played with the Mets since being recalled on July 2. He's appeared in 17 games overall this season, hitting .182/.217/.182.

Mets walk it off against Tigers 00:01:01
New York Mets go the distance in walk-off fashion thanks to the bats of catchers Wilson Ramos and Tomas Nido.

The Mets won a wild, ugly game against the Tigers in 13 innings on Saturday afternoon at Citi Field >> Box score

Six things to know about Saturday's game

1) Leading off the bottom of the 13th inning with the game tied, 4-4, Tomas Nido smoked a homer to right field to give the Mets a 5-4 win. Nido's homer came after Hector Santiago escaped a bases loaded, one-out jam in the 12th inning before working a scoreless 13th.

2) With the game tied, 4-4, in the bottom of the 11th, the Mets wasted a golden opportunity to win. After a one-out walk by Wilson Ramos (who was pinch-run for by Steven Matz), consecutive singles by Dominic Smith and Todd Frazier loaded the bases for the Mets with one out. That brought up Aaron Altherr, who struck out swinging after getting ahead in the count 3-1. Things were left to Adeiny Hechavarria, who grounded out to the pitcher on a 3-2 pitch.

Marlins blank Mets 00:00:44
The Mets managed just one hit against Pablo Lopez, whom they knocked out in New York last week, as the Marlins shut them out, 2-0

The Mets fell to a season-worst four games under .500 after failing to muster any offense or fight on Saturday in Miami. >> Box score

Five things to know about Saturday's game...

1) With manager Mickey Callaway's job status potentially in a precarious spot, the Mets gave an absolutely listless performance as they managed just one hit while losing their second-straight game to the MLB-worst Marlins. It was their fourth-straight loss overall. After Jeff McNeil led the game off by doubling off Marlins starter Pablo Lopez, 14 consecutive Mets were set down as he settled into a groove. This was the same Pablo Lopez the Mets scored 10 runs against last week.

Brewers sweep Mets 00:01:09
Christian Yelich returned to the lineup and launched a two-run homer to help the Brewers complete a sweep of the Mets

A defensive miscue led to the only three Brewers runs and cost the Mets a game as they lost, 3-2, to get swept out of Milwaukee and fall two games under .500. >> Box score

Five things to know about Sunday's game...

1) A day after the Mets played 18 innings in a heartbreaking loss, Mickey Callaway/Brodie Van Wagenen rolled out a lineup that was without Jeff McNeil (Callaway said he needed a day), Michael Conforto, Robinson Cano, and Wilson Ramos. J.D. Davis, who has hit well while being a detriment defensively, was also out of the lineup. All except Ramos eventually pinch-hit.

In the wake of making the postseason in 2015 and 2016, the Mets have gone 147-177, fired their manager, watched the face of their franchise retire, and have taken a gamble by hiring a former agent to lead their revival.

In five months, Brodie Van Wagenen has modernized the organization's front office and staff, has added five former All Stars, stabilized the depth and back end of the roster, and inked Jacob deGrom to a contract extension. At the same time, during the past two years, a shift has been created in the NL East with a large crop of young talent emerging and older players either leaving or switching teams.

The dust has settled and, to the surprise of most New York fans -- myself included -- the Mets are projected to contend for the NL East title. However, so are three other teams...

Five things to know about Tuesday's game...

1) Jacob deGrom got another spring start, and it was a pretty good one for the Mets' ace. The only blip on his line was a two-run homer allowed to Brian Anderson in the bottom of the third inning. Overall, he allowed those two earned runs on six hits while striking out six and walking none over five innings of work.

Mets reliever Drew Smith, who seemed on track to be in the Opening Day bullpen, needs Tommy John surgery, manager Mickey Callaway said Monday.

Smith, who had been sent back to New York to be evaluated by team doctors, is out for the season.

The 25-year-old Smith had been solid so far in Spring Training, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings while walking three and striking out four.

After Steven Matz was lit up for seven runs in less than an inning of work, the Nationals continued to pile onto the Mets' bullpen on Tuesday night in what was the most lopsided loss in Mets history.

The Nationals scored three runs every inning from the second until the fifth and then tacked on six more in the eighth inning.

Jacob Rhame and Jose Reyes allowed six runs apiece, while Tim Peterson and Tyler Bashlor allowed three runs.

According to WJCL's Frank Sulkowski, RHP Tyler Bashlor out of South Georgia College is set to sign a contract with the Mets. Bashlor attended Calvary Day HS in Savannah, GA.

According to Baseball America, Bashlor:

has raised his profile over the last two years, ranking as BA's No. 2 prospect in the Futures Collegiate League last summer and continuing to perform well this spring. .... Scouts report his fastball now sits at 92-94 mph and touches 97, and he flashes a solid-average slider with late break.... He didn't show great command (52 IP, 30 BB, 81 SO), and pro teams view him strictly as a reliever.
It sounds like Bashlor will receive over $500,000 to sign. As an 11th round pick, everything over $100,000 counts against the Mets' $6.99 million draft signing pool.
